The early settlers from South Asia included a range of transitory and permanent migrants, and were a diverse group from different regions of South Asia. Some of them survived on the margins of British society, lived and died as destitutes but others were very wealthy. South Asian migrants over the centuries included servants, such as nursemaids and travelling nannies known as ayahs who accompanied British families returning from India, sailors lascars who settled in port cities like Glasgow, London, Liverpool and Cardiff, soldiers who fought in the two world wars, members of Indian royal and aristocratic families who came for education purposes and for leisure trips, and professionals like doctors, lawyers and merchants.

Seamen who were recruited from Sylhet in present-day Bangladesh and Mirpur in present-day Pakistan were often not re-employed on return journeys and so were forced to remain in Britain. Others jumped ship to escape maltreatment and poor working conditions.

South Asian Area Studies

The study of language gives unique access to the culture of a region, to its contemporary life and its historical civilization. Together we constitute one of the largest centres of South Asian studies outside the subcontinent; and being located in a city which itself contains a virtual microcosm of South Asia brings incalculable benefits to us and our students.

The insight provided, knowledge delivered and understanding transmitted during lectures, seminars and conferences at SOAS is impressive and requires real personal involvement in the topics. I have had the chance to read the most up to date, often controversial and revealing perspectives on South Asia, presented by leading academics who will often actually be members of the South Asia Department Faculty itself.

My choice to study at SOAS was the best decision I ever made; being a student here is an exciting and unique experience. I feel that the thorough and systematic teaching provided by SOAS has given me not only a good knowledge of Sanskrit but also skills in critical thought, linguistic and socio-political analysis and communication that will give me something unique to offer to a graduate employer.

This week sees a number of different items, from both the Society and from people associated with it. The scope of the JRAS is broad, covering the length and breadth of Asia from ancient times up until It is therefore inevitable that some eras and areas are emphasised over and above others. Our special issues tend to concentrate on periods, topics and places that are currently receiving attention in mainstream research and university syllabi, while regular issues containing stand-alone articles refresh and provide balance as they fill the various nooks and crannies of our remit not always visited quite so often.

Our spring issue does exactly this. As regular Journal readers will be aware, our publishing partner CUP has decided to suspend all print publication until the world comes out of lockdown but we wish to reassure Fellows, yet again, that this issue will be available in the print form in the future. As we do not know yet when this will be, we would urge you, in the meantime, to read it online.

If any Fellow experiences difficulty in gaining access to articles in the latest JRAS issue please let us know. Max Communications host and maintain our Digital Library and they were keen to find out about the varied collections that the Society hold and how we care for them and give access to researchers. The podcast is available for anyone to listen, so if you are also interested in our Collections, then please follow this link.
